Blood Bowl Sevens Team- The Blue Reach Boars

Image
The Big Boar himself Well, I have finally finished painting my Greebo Games Porclings- it's only taken me 6 months... Anyway, I'm going to quickly run over my plans for the team, and then also how they were to paint! My plans for the team are to run them as Goblins, with the Boar as a Troll- this just felt more 'right' than them being Halflings (the Boar isn't really Treeman-like) or any of the other Stunty teams, where the linemen are a bit too small for the Porcs! For my teams Lore- these are the Blue Reach Boars . Having once lived as Halflings in the Moot, one day all was to change for the little lives of these merry folk. After an altercation with a travelling wizard, accusing the Halflings of refusing to pay for his services during a warm-up game for the Thimble Cup (something the Halfling's furiously deny!), he left the village cursing the occupants for their greed. The next morning, the Halfling villagers woke to find that they were transformed into pi...

Middle Earth SBG Battle Report- Fellowship vs Isenguard 300pts

Image
The Uruk-Hai of Isengard, sent out by their master Saruman to seek the Halflings of the Shire, track them down to an overgrown ruin North of the lands of Rohan. Can their guide and protector, the ranger from the North, Aragorn, save the Hobbits whilst they escape? The Armies The Fellowship Leader- Aragorn with bow and armour. Frodo Sam Pippin Merry This was the list I brought for the game- a nice 300 point list based on Aragorn and the Hobbits' journey from Bree to Rivendell. The list is going to revolve around how well Aragorn does- if he can take out some of the Isenguard heroes, whilst the Hobbits keep out of danger- victory could be in reach. Start to lose the Hobbits, and Aragorn may find himself unable to win on victory points. Isengard Leader- Lurtz with shield Vrasku Gorulf Ironskin Sharku with warg My Isengard loving friend is taking out a fun 300 point all-hero list. Individually- Aragorn shouldn't have a problem taking out any of these Heroes- but can he stop all 4...

Trying out Munitorum Varnish

Image
Though it is 12 years since I started the hobby- I have never used a varnish before. Up until today, my models have always gone into the world with just their paint- exposed to the elements. (Or, more realistically for my earliest time in the hobby- just base-coated). I suppose I had never seen varnishing models as something that was necessary as a teenager, but since returning to the hobby after my university hiatus, I've been considering protecting my miniatures more seriously. Reading up on varnishes, it seems a lot of people consider varnishing models a necessity- something which can assist with the finish to a paint job as well as protecting them. As I've got a project which involves a lot of metal miniatures, and metal chips paint very easily, I finally decided to take the plunge and try some out. I decided just to go with Games Workshops offering for the first varnish I would buy. I suspect that this probably isn't the best varnish out there, but as Games Workshop...

Black Templar Range Refresh- Time to Dust Off the Crusading Gear?

Image
Medieval. Knights. In. Space. It was this iconic concept which inspired me, aged 12, to start collecting the Black Templars- and I've had a soft spot for these Dressing-Gown garbed Space Marines ever since. The Black Templars weren't my first 40k miniatures- I actually started my journey in the 40k universe with some Imperial guard models- but as I got more familiar with the lore, it was the Black Templars that ended up catching my imagination. As a fan of fantasy, who had started playing The Lord of the Rings Strategy Battle Game in 2009, they were the obvious choice when my group of friends were sucked into the Games Workshop vortex of Warhammer 40,000. Deep in the days of 5th edition 40k, whilst my friends were picking up Tau, Orks and Tyranids, I was drawn to one of the older Codices in the store, and for a whopping £15, the Black Templar codex was mine. Not having much money- my force ended up being a very dysfunctional mix of models, and there was always something janky...

Why I'm excited for the Khorne Blood Bowl team

Image
Games Workshop showed off the starting stats for the new Khorne team on Warhammer Community a few days ago- and it looks like it is going to have a really unique playstyle. What makes this Khorne team so exciting to me is that they feel like they're filling a niche of the 'glasshammer' bashing team. Unlike some of the other teams with lower armour and fighting skills (think Amazons and Norse) the Khorne team isn't starting with any 'defensive' skills like Block or Dodge- it's all about the offence. Frenzy Frenzy is normally reserved for 1 or 2 models per team, but with Khorne, the majority of your players are going to be wielding this skill in game. This is the key to what makes them so unique- Frenzy can be a blessing, or a curse.  For your strength 4 pieces, the Bloodseekers, Frenzy is going to be a brutal skill. Getting 2 goes at a strength 3 opponent is going to massively increase the chances of this team breaking through the line. Once you've got ...

New Blood Bowl Khorne Team- First Impressions

Image
Games Workshop just released the new Khorne team at GenCon- how does the team stack up? Overall, the models do look good. If I had one complaint, it would be that a few of them look more like AOS miniatures than Blood Bowl miniatures, but I'm excited to see the new rules for a Khorne team. Bloodborn Marauder Linemen For me, these are perhaps the weakest part of the set- and the most AOS looking of the miniatures. The heads make a big difference- the top-knot head options wouldn't be for me, but then the models would have identical duplicates. As the linemen of the team, they're solid overall- a 6/10. Bloodseekers I really like the Bloodseekers- they have been sculpted in a way that they look like they're playing a sport, while maintaining some of the distinct Khorne aesthetic. The poses have some good dynamism to them- almost mirroring the poses of the Bloaters from the Nurgle team. These make it to a 8/10. Khorngor This is my favourite part of the new set. The Khorng...

Is Warhammer too expensive? Part 3- Playing OOP games

Image
Before I begin on part 3, a quick note: Part 3 is going to focus on Games Workshop games still, specifically games no longer made by the company. I'm going to take a look at why these games are still worth your time! Out of Production Games and you Out of Production (OOP) games are those which are no longer supported by the company that produced them. No new models are being made for them, no rules updates, no new codex to buy. So you might think that they aren't worth playing. Warmaster- a 10mm scale game made by Games Workshop in the 2000s It can be a hard sell. Everyone you know is playing something with current rules, there are no new models to get excited about and you may not have even heard of them before. But OOP games aren't dead- they have just found a new life, a life beyond Games Workshop. The Positives Let's take a look at why you may enjoy an OOP game in 2021: No constant rules updates- no keeping up with the new edition, or buying a book every 2 years. If...

Is Warhammer too expensive? Part 2- The cheapest way to start playing Warhammer

Image
In Part 1, I looked at some of the discussion surrounding the price of Games Workshop models. In Part 2, I'm going to break down the cost to start various different games, and think about why the 2 we see the most of; Age of Sigmar and Warhammer 40k, are actually the worst games to start with. We're going to have a look at the cheapest* ways to get into a few games in comparison to 40k and Age of Sigmar. In each case, I won't be factoring in hobby supplies (glue, paint, brushes etc.) as these are roughly similar for each game, or terrain (unless the game needs a custom board, such as Blood Bowl). I'm going to refer to prices on the Games Workshop store- but you can get most of these products 10-20% off if you shop around. A Quick Note: Non-Games Workshop Games This may be one of the first places you're pointed to, especially by those disgruntled with Games Workshop, if you're looking for a reasonably priced game to play. There are pros and cons with this though...
