Black Templar Range Refresh- Time to Dust Off the Crusading Gear?

Image
Medieval. Knights. In. Space. It was this iconic concept which inspired me, aged 12, to start collecting the Black Templars- and I've had a soft spot for these Dressing-Gown garbed Space Marines ever since. The Black Templars weren't my first 40k miniatures- I actually started my journey in the 40k universe with some Imperial guard models- but as I got more familiar with the lore, it was the Black Templars that ended up catching my imagination. As a fan of fantasy, who had started playing The Lord of the Rings Strategy Battle Game in 2009, they were the obvious choice when my group of friends were sucked into the Games Workshop vortex of Warhammer 40,000. Deep in the days of 5th edition 40k, whilst my friends were picking up Tau, Orks and Tyranids, I was drawn to one of the older Codices in the store, and for a whopping £15, the Black Templar codex was mine. Not having much money- my force ended up being a very dysfunctional mix of models, and there was always something janky...

Is Warhammer too expensive? Part 3- Playing OOP games

Image
Before I begin on part 3, a quick note: Part 3 is going to focus on Games Workshop games still, specifically games no longer made by the company. I'm going to take a look at why these games are still worth your time! Out of Production Games and you Out of Production (OOP) games are those which are no longer supported by the company that produced them. No new models are being made for them, no rules updates, no new codex to buy. So you might think that they aren't worth playing. Warmaster- a 10mm scale game made by Games Workshop in the 2000s It can be a hard sell. Everyone you know is playing something with current rules, there are no new models to get excited about and you may not have even heard of them before. But OOP games aren't dead- they have just found a new life, a life beyond Games Workshop. The Positives Let's take a look at why you may enjoy an OOP game in 2021: No constant rules updates- no keeping up with the new edition, or buying a book every 2 years. If...

Is Warhammer too expensive? Part 2- The cheapest way to start playing Warhammer

Image
In Part 1, I looked at some of the discussion surrounding the price of Games Workshop models. In Part 2, I'm going to break down the cost to start various different games, and think about why the 2 we see the most of; Age of Sigmar and Warhammer 40k, are actually the worst games to start with. We're going to have a look at the cheapest* ways to get into a few games in comparison to 40k and Age of Sigmar. In each case, I won't be factoring in hobby supplies (glue, paint, brushes etc.) as these are roughly similar for each game, or terrain (unless the game needs a custom board, such as Blood Bowl). I'm going to refer to prices on the Games Workshop store- but you can get most of these products 10-20% off if you shop around. A Quick Note: Non-Games Workshop Games This may be one of the first places you're pointed to, especially by those disgruntled with Games Workshop, if you're looking for a reasonably priced game to play. There are pros and cons with this though...

Is Warhammer too expensive? Part 1- an overview

Image
The question of the price of Games Workshop's products is not a new one, and it isn't going anywhere soon. It can't be denied that this is an expensive hobby- if you are just starting in the Hobby, you're looking at a decent buy in price.  You'll need the models of course, some glue to assemble them, some paint to give them that scheme you've been dreaming up and some paint brushes, to actually, you know, paint. Then, you'll need the rulebook to play the game, a codex/armybook for the faction you chose, some dice, a measuring tape, somewhere to store your miniatures, oh, and there is now a new book out which has changed the points cost of the book you just bought, better go and buy that too. Finally, you need somewhere to play- you may be lucky enough to live near a store or club, but for some, the set up cost is going to include a bit of terrain, or a board to play on. Now, clearly if you're jumping into a full 2000 point 40k army- the standard for ...
