Taking a Break

I've been working on this blog for over a year now, and I've decided to take a little break. This is partly to focus on other creative efforts (Shameless plug for the Podcast that myself, Mayor and OT are making: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCasKz-U7t78migdHL8b_CWw) but also to reduce some of the workload I've got at the moment. Although there was nothing making me update the blog, I'd been trying to produce at least 3 posts a month, and it just wasn't realistic. Rather than continuing to have a slow trickle, I've decided to put things on hold for the moment. I'll still be doing my hobby, but I'll be focussing just on doing it as a means to relax rather than sharing as content. I'll most likely return to the blog when I've got time, and some inspiration for new things that I'd like to do at some point in 2023!

Plastic Soldier Company Late Romans Review

Image
I've always wanted some Romans, but never quite bit the bullet and bought any to paint. But, having wanted to dabble more in historical gaming, and having bought the 2nd edition of the Lion Rampant rules when they came out, I had the perfect excuse. Why then did I settle on the Plastic Soldier Company Late Romans over all the other options out there? Well, I wanted to try out a smaller scale, and I'm not the biggest fan of metal. These seemed to offer up an ideal solution then- a 'soft-plastic' alternative, coming in very cheaply (I picked up the army box for under £40) and with some nice sculpts. How did I get on with them then? Value: 5/5 I really can't fault the pricing here. Being used to mainly Games Workshop, with a little bit of Warlord Games and 3D printing here and there- getting a whole army for so little money feels like fantastic value. If you're looking to get into historical wargaming cheaply- I'd be pointing them to this product as a good op

Middle-Earth Kitbashing: Aragorn with Pony

Image
I'm back after my break with my latest work for Middle-Earth SBG. What inspired this Aragorn model is a list I'm currently building for a Doubles Tournament at the start of next year, which I'm taking part in with friend of the Blog OT (you can hear from OT each week on our podcast,  The Hobby Breakfast Show ). We're theming our army around the flight of the Hobbits and Strider from The Nine- 400 points each, with my Fellowship Army having the Hobbits, Strider, Bill the Pony and Arwen (OT will be bringing Elrond and some Rivendell Knights). As part of this list, I wanted to give Aragorn a little more bite than his foot-version, and with Anduril yet to be re-forged, a horse was the only option. I decided that it would be more in keeping to have Aragorn leading a pony for this list though- and so I went on the hunt for a 3D printed pony in the right scale. Fortunately, I found one easily, sculpted by 'The Printing Goes Ever On' and printed for me by the Etsy sel

Burrows and Badgers: Owl Guard and Mouse Rogue

Image
Back again with another quick Burrows and Badgers update.  I've finished off the last of my 'Knightly' warband- the Owl Guard who accompanies the Corgi Knight who leads the group. The Owl was very simple to paint- mostly just Leadbelcher with a Nuln Oil wash, and any feathers/skin poking through painted with Rakarth Flesh- so it looks something like a Barn Owl. I also painted up another creature for the other warband I'm painting- which follows a more Woodland/Riverbank animal theme. I really like this Duncan Louca sculpt- she's a very simple model, but carries a lot of character with the determined look that's conveyed in the face. I actually painted the fur very similarly to the Corgi Knight (XV-88 + Seraphim Sepia), and then mixed the XV-88 with some light fleshtone for the skin, before highlighting with just the fleshtone. Armed with two fangs (presumably from a larger animal she had found somewhere?), she's not likely to be very powerful in-game- but

Burrows and Badgers: Landsknecht Badger and Cleric Beagle

Image
Quick update today on my Burrows and Badgers painting. I've finished 2 more for my 'Knightly' warband- an elite group led by a Corgi Knight, who accompany him on his hunting expeditions- or when necessary, to fight another warband in the lands of Northumbrya. The Badger was a fun sculpt I got 3D printed (like some of the others I've done previously, designed by Duncan Louca)- in the style of a Landsknecht. I was fairly happy with the result- but I'm not sure if the Red-Yellow worked quite as well as I wanted. The yellow in the recesses of the clothing doesn't stand out fantastically- but well enough that I didn't repaint the whole model. The next miniature is the Second in my warband- the back up leader to my Corgi Knight, the Beagle Cleric. I was happy with the red cloak on this one- but I think I chose too light a yellow for the tabard. The Seraphim Sepia ended up being just a little too dark, but the effect isn't awful. I tried out a gold piece of a

Bilbo's Party: Bilbo and Lobelia

Image
I'm starting a new Middle Earth project, which I'm going to be following along as I go on the blog (to plug my Middle Earth shaped hobby hole). This is very much a passion project- it's safe to say that the 600 point army that I'm building can be nothing other than one... The aim is to create an all Hero List themed around Bilbo's Birthday Party, from the beginning of the Fellowship of the Ring. This means an all-Hero list, where with the exception of Gandalf, all the heroes are going to be Hobbits... Safe to say this won't be winning many matches anytime soon. Regardless, I really wanted to scratch an itch for building a Hobbit list. Around 12 years ago I built a Hobbit list, which I sold about 5 years ago. I had painted it to a standard I wasn't massively happy with, and I didn't fancy stripping all those Hobbits. When I was looking then at rebuilding a Shire list, I didn't fancy the horde army again. Large armies just don't fit with my hobby
